Definition of hail
Hail is the ice particles ball-shaped or irregularly shaped (hailstones) the size of a millimeter to several centimeters. There are hailstones the size of 130 mm and weighing about 1 kg. Hailstones consist of a number of layers of transparent ice thickness of not less than 1 mm, alternating with semi-transparent layers.

This is one of the largest hailstones ever observed in the United States. The stone fell on June 22, 2003 in Aurora, Nebraska

The largest recorded hailstone in the United States by diameter 8 inches (20 cm) and weight 1.93 pounds (0.88 kg). The hailstone fell in Vivian, South Dakota on July 23, 2010.
