Getting education was very important to rich people in Ancient Rome, while
the poor did not have an opportunity to get a formal education though they often learnt to read and write. Children from rich families were well schooled and were taught by a private tutor at home or went to what we would recognize as schools today. In general, the schools were for boys only. The school day used to be very long. During a school day a child would rise at sunrise, work all day with a short break at lunch, and then go home to be in bed by sunset for the next day. There was not a great deal of subject choice in a Roman school. Texts were simply learnt by heart as books were very expensive and not everyone could afford to buy them. learning in public schools was heavily disciplined with caning for the slightest mistake. This was to encourage to belief that boys would learn more quickly and accurately if they were in constant fear of making mistakes.
