Karl Brullov — a famous portrait painter in Russia, the author of
paintings and their ideas in several Central cathedrals and churches of St. Petersburg — became famous primarily as a historical painter. Arriving in Italy in 1823, Brullov began searching for a theme for the historical canvas. The plot of the painting "the Last day of Pompeii" (1833) — the most important works not only in the works of Bryullov, but also in all Russian painting — was prompted by the artist's older brother, Alexander, who was engaged as an architect sketches of excavations in Pompeii. Brullov worked on the canvas for more than five years, performing many sketches and several scenic sketches. "The last day of Pompeii" is one of the rare for Russia completed romantic plans for a historical story. In vivid pictorial form Bryullov brought favorite romantic theme of the tragedy. The behavior and condition of the inhabitants of Pompeii in the fateful moment — the main storyline of the work. Solving it in a major emotional and coloristic way, the artist gives the tragedy a sublime sound.
