Sergey Vasilievich Lebedev

Sergey Vasilyevich Lebedev (1874 — 1934) - Soviet chemist, founder of the industrial process for the production of synthetic rubber. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1932).

Was born in family of the priest. Secondary education in Warsaw, where he became interested in chemistry. In 1895, he joined the Natural Sciences Department of Physics and Mathematics Faculty of St. Petersburg University. Under the guidance of Professor, Academician of the future Favorsky completed graduate work. In 1899, for taking part in student demonstrations Lebedev was arrested and deported almost a year out of the capital. In 1900 he graduated from the University of St. Petersburg, and from 1902 began to work at the university, engaging chemistry of hydrocarbons. In 1910, he managed to get the first sample of synthetic butadiene rubber.

Not being able to remain at the university to continue his scientific work, Lebedev had to work as a laboratory assistant at the soap factory AM Zhukov. In 1902, Lebedev was appointed laboratory department of technical and analytical chemistry at St. Petersburg University.
Scientific work was interrupted in 1904 by the mobilization of the military. Lebedev served as an ensign in Finland.

In early 1926 an international contest for the best industrial method of producing synthetic rubber.

In the same 1931 Lebedev was awarded the Order of Lenin. The scientific activity of the scientist was recognized Academy of Sciences. In 1932 - Member of the Academy.
In different years the academician Lebedev worked at the Military medical Academy, Leningrad technological Institute.
