England

England is in north-west Europe and is in the southern part of Great Britain. It is an island country and also part of the United Kingdom.
England is the largest country in Great Britain and the UK.
It is sometimes, wrongly, used in reference to the whole United Kingdom, the entire island of Great Britain, or indeed the British Isles. This is not only incorrect but can cause offence to people from other parts of the UK. Nearly 84% of the population of the UK lives in England, mainly in the major cities and metropolitan areas.

National Symbol and flag
Many images associated with England are found on souvenirs. The three national symbols of England are the St. George's cross (usually seen as a flag), the red rose and the Three Lions crest (usually seen as a badge).

England is the largest and the richest part of Great Britain. London - Capital of Great Britain.
The biggest industrial cities are London, Liverpool, Birmingham, Manchester, and other interesting cities as York, Chester, Oxford, and Cambridge.
Lots of people are involved in service industries including financial, business and government services, computer services and information system. There are science-based companies and research organizations. The Midlands Region has much farming land, but this part of the country is better known as an industrial area. Birmingham is famous for engineering, especially car production. Derby is another engineering centre. Rolls Royce makes aero engines and cars there. The West Midlands, Another industrialized area where there are many collieries and steelworks.

Most of England comprises the central and southern part of the island of Great Britain in the North Atlantic. The country also includes over 100 smaller islands such as the Isles of Scilly and the Isle of Wight. Geographically England comprises the central and southern two-thirds of the island of Great Britain, plus such offshore islands as the Isle of Wight and the Isles of Scilly. England is closer to the European Continent than any other part of mainland Britain. There are many lakes in England, the largest of these is Windermere, it is known by the nickname "Queen of Lakes". The Severn is the longest river flowing through England. The landscape consists mostly of hills and mountains.

Multicultural Britain
Britain has always been a mixed society. In the distant past, Celts, Romans, Saxons, Vikings, and Normans all settled in Britain.
People from countries in the European Union are free to travel, live and work in any other EU country. Recently a lot of people have arrived from Central and Eastern Europe.
- There are thousands of Indian and Chinese restaurants in the UK.
- Immigrants from the West Indies started the Notting Hill Carnival in 1965. It is now the biggest street festival in Europe.
- There are lots of Irish pubs in Britain and Irish folk music is popular.
- West Indian music, like reggae, has had a strong influence on British pop music.

Museums and Galleries
Visit Madame Tussauds and see models of the world’s most famous people, including all your favourite actors and singers. There are some great museums. Don’t miss Egyptian mummies at the British Museum or the dinosaurs at the natural History Museum. Do you like modern art? Then visit the Tate Modern.
The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy, which means that the head of the state is a monarch. Today, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second is the queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Interesting buildings
The Tower of London is over 900 years old and for a long time it was a prison. After the Tower, take a boat trip down the river to St Paul’s Cathedral, and then take a ride on The London Eye. There are fantastic views from the top.

Shopping
London has over 40,000 shops and 26 major street markets to choose from. There are lots of fantastic shops in London. Walk down Oxford Street, or visit one of the lively street markets, where everything is cheap!

Night life
There are lots of exiting things to do in the evening. The West End is full of theatres, cinemas and great restaurants. There are all kinds of concerts every night – rock, classical, pop, jazz…
