The Past Continuous is used to express a past activity happening over a period of time

Обставини часу, характерні для Past Continuous:
At 6 o‘clock yesterday
When mother came home
From 10 till 11 yesterday
The whole evening

Зверніть увагу:
When mother came home, I was reading a book.
mother came home – одноразова дія (прийшла) (Past Simple)
Was reading – дія в процесі (читав)
