English – speaking countries
UK of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

Great Britain
The British Isles lie in the northwest of Europe. Two large islands, Great Britain and Ireland, and many smaller ones form a group of the British Isles. Great Britain is the largest island in Europe.
Their total area is over 244 000 square kilometers. The population is over 55 million.
It consist of England, Scotland and Wales, historical regions of Great Britain. England is situated in the north of the island and Wales in the west.
Great Britain in washed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish Sea in the west and by the English Channel in the south.

ENGLAND

London
London consists of four main districts wish differ from each other. There are the City, Westminster, the West End and the East End.
The City is small in area, but it is the business of London.
Westminster is the most important part of the capital. It is the administrative centre.
To the west of the Westminster is the West End. Here we find most of the big shops, hotels, museums, art galleries and concert halls.
To the east of the Westminster is the East End, an industrial district of the capital.
London – it is the city of contrasts.

London is one of the largest cities in the world. About seven million people live here. London is more than two thousand years old. London’s most famous sights are Tower Bridge, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square and St. Paul’s Cathedral. You’ll see all these places and much more of London from our red double-decker.

Land that I love

The United States of America is the fourth largest country in the world. It occupies the southern part of North America and stretches from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean.
The USA is made up of 50 states and the District of Columbia, a special federal area where the capital of the country is situated.

The highest mountains are the Rocky Mountains, the Cordillera and the Sierra Nevada. The highest peak is Mount McKinley, which is located in Alaska.
America's largest rivers are the Mississippi, the Missouri, the Rio Grande and the Columbia.

The capital of the USA is Washington. The United States has own government in each state.
According to the US Constitution the powers of the government are divided into 3 branches: the executive, headed by the President, the legislative, exercised by the Congress, and the judicial.

The common names of the Flag of the USA are the "Stars and Stripes", "Old Glory" and the "Star-Spangled Banner".
In 1776 new country needed a new flag. There were used three colors: red for courage, white for liberty, and blue for justice. In 1777 the Congress of the USA confirmed this flag as the national flag.
The words of the National anthem were taken from a poem by Francis Scott Key. This poem "The Star-Spangled Banner" was written about a battle between Britain and The USA in 1812.

Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland is situated in the northeastern part of Ireland. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland make the United Kingdom.

Northern Ireland is the smallest part of the United Kingdom. Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland.

The population of Northern Ireland is about 1,5 million people. 53 per cent of the total population live in urban areas. The largest industry is agriculture.

Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland is the leading industrial centre and a large port. Its main industries are the production of linen and other textiles, clothing, shipbuilding, engineering.

The Irish poets call Ireland «the Emerald Isle». It is all due to the green grass. The fact Is that the winds usually blow in from the Atlantic Ocean and make the air and soil warm and damp.

WALES

HISTORY
Wales had its begginings in the 6th century.England’s Edward I overcame the last princes of Wales in 1283.He built his castles to subdue the Wales and gave his son Edward (1284-1327) to the nation as Prince of Wales.

Places of interest
Cardiff has been the country’s capital only since 1955.It is a major coal-shipping port and manufacturing center.Visitors enjoy the broad tree-lined streets, National Museum of Wales,Civic Center and City Hall, the Cardiff Market and the New Theatre.

Scotland

Scotland is a country in the north of Great Britain. The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh, well known for its castle. Glasgow is the industrial capital of Scotland.

Scotland is full of mountains and lakes. The highest mountain is Ben Nevis. There are a lot of rivers. The Scottish flag is a white cross on a blue background. The cross is the cross of Saint Andrew.

Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland and the third largest in the United Kingdom. Heavy industry began to develop. It used coal and iron from the Clyde valley. Glasgow became rich but very dirty.

Glasgow has a busy cultural life . A lot of musicals, actors and singers come to Glasgow to give concerts . It the evenings the opera house , the cinema and the concert halls are full.

Australia

Australia, or the Commonwealth of Australia, as it is officially called, is situated on the island continent.

Australia is located south of Asia, between the Pacific and the Indian Oceans. It is a vast continent, made up of mainland Australia and of island Tasmania to the south. The Australian continent is washed in the north by the Timor and Arafura Seas and Torres Strait, in the east by the Tasman and Coral Seas, of the South Pacific Ocean, in the south by Bass Strait and the Indian Ocean. Australia is the flattest of the continents. Its most important chain is the Great Dividing Range running down most of the east coast. Other mountains include the Kimberley and Hamersley Ranges in Western Australia, the Flinders Range in South Australia. The centre of the continent is taken by the deserts: Great Sandy Desert, Great Victoria Desert, and Simpson Desert. There are few rivers in Australia. Its best known river is the Murray. The longest is the Darling.
AUSTRALIA

The capital of Australia is Canberra, which became the capital only in 1927. It was founded in the 20th century and now has a population of about 260000 people.

Canada

Canada in the world
Canada is the second largest country in the world. Only Russia has a greater land area. Canada is situated in North America. Canada is slightly larger that the United States, but has only about a tenth as many people. About 28 million people live in Canada. About 80% of the population live uninhabited or thinly populated because of severe natural conditions.

New Zealand
She is an island country in the Southwest Pacific ocean. It lies about 1 600 km southwest of Australia and about 10 500 km southwest of California.
New Zealand belongs to a large island group called Polynesia.

Situated
The country is situated on two main islands – the North Island and the South Island – and several dozen smaller islands.
Most of the smaller islands are hungers of kilometers from the main ones.

Economy
New Zealand has one of the highest standard of living in the world.
For many years, the economy of the country depended largely on agriculture.
