successful English colony (Jamestown) was founded in the present state of Virginia.
July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence.
The Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783.
March 1789 The American representative (indirect) democratic system in the form of a constitutional republic was established in the Constitution of the United States.
There are 27 amendments which have been added to the Constitution. The most important are:
13 – outlaws slavery
14 – guarantees all citizens equal protection of the laws
19 – gives women the right to vote (Ratified in August, 1920)
