В настоящее время существует несколько разновидностей лакросса, отличающихся размерами поля, числом игроков и правилами. С 1974 проводятся чемпионаты мира по лакроссу, в которых принимают участие команды различных стран, а также индейского племени ирокезов. Лакросс дважды включался в программу летних Олимпийских игр — в 1904 и 1908 годах.
