Trick-or-Treat

In the Spanish-speaking countries of the Americas, people don’t think of the dead as evil spirits. Instead of going treat or treat on Halloween, whole families visit the cemetery on November 1 and 2. They dress in holiday clothing and bring food and flowers to the graves of their loved ones. They spend the day having a pleasant family picnic. Marigolds, the “flowers of the dead", are laid on graves.

Ghosts, Ghosts, Ghosts

A Magic Brew
In the cauldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
Adder’s fork, and blind-worm’s sting,
Lizard’s leg, and owlet’s wing,
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble,
Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.”

Witches and Black Cats
If you want to meet a witch this old superstition tells you what you must do. Put your clothes on wrong side out. Walk backwards to a crossroads on Halloween night. At midnight you’ll see a witch.

Black cats were the partners of witches. Many people were afraid of cats. Some thought cats were the spirits of the dead. Others believed that witches changed themselves into cats. If people met a cat, they asked: "Is this really a cat? Or is this a witch changed into a cat?”

Orange or gold, and black are the Halloween colors. Orange and gold stand for ripe fruits and grain. This idea comes from Pomona. Black is for black magic and black cats, for the mystery of Halloween. This comes from Samhain.

A JACK O’LANTERN

Put into the right order:
Put the candle inside the pumpkin.
Cut a nose and a mouth.
Cut eyes.
Take a huge yellow pumpkin.
Light a candle.
Put the pumpkin near or in the house.

Mischief Night

Instead of collecting candy on Halloween night some children collect money for the United Nations Children's Fund, or UNICEF. That way, they can have fun and at the same time help children all around the world.

Jack-o’-lanterns got their name from a fellow named Jack who, according to an old Irish legend, was so stingy with his money that he was not allowed into heaven. But poor Jack had played pranks on the devil, so he was not allowed into hell, either! Instead, he is destined to wander around forever, with his lantern, waiting for Judgment Day.
