HIGHER EDUCATION IN THE USA
The system of higher education in the USA consists of colleges and universities, but there is no national system of higher education in the USA. There are a lot of two-year colleges, universities, technical institutes, classical liberal arts colleges.
The college course of study is usually four years. Colleges usually award such degrees as: Bachelor of Arts (A.B.), Bachelor of Science (B.C.), Bachelor of Philosophy (Ph.B.), Bachelor of Letters (B.L.).
The college course usually includes mathematics. Engilsh, philosophy, economy, history, at least one modern European language, and at least one natural science. The college course of Bachelor of Arts includes Latin and sometimes Greek too.
Another University degree is the degree of Master of Arts (M.A.). To obtain this degree the candidate must pass certain exams after one year of studies. Some universities maintain schools of law and medicine, Harward and Yale universities maintain school of theology a well.
The main honour of the university is the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). The minimum period of study for this degree is 2 years after obtaining Bachelor’s degree. The candidate for this degree must pass exams on one or two subjects and to submit the thesis with the results of his research.
