Nick Kerrauey , a graduate of Yale University and a veteran of the First World , is in a sanatorium , where is being treated for alcoholism. He tells about a man named Gatsby , whom fate brought him to New York. Nick is difficult to talk about it, and the doctor offers him describe this story on paper.
Nick begins his narrative recollection of how in 1922 he moved from the Midwest to New York and rented a house in West Egge on Long Island . Nick visits the luxurious estate of Tom and Daisy Buchanan . Daisy was Nick's second cousin , and her husband , Tom, once played football at Yale (where he was nodding familiar with Nick ) , and now enjoys wealth. In this house, Nick meets Jordan Baker , Daisy's friend and the famous golfer . Jordan tells Nick that Tom has a mistress in New York .
Meeting with the latest, Myrtle Wilson , the wife of an unsuspecting mechanic George , Tom rents an apartment in the city. Tom invites Nick there , where he also met with Catherine , her sister Myrtle , and the couple, McKee, Myrtle friends . In response, Jay insists that Daisy said that she never loved Tom , hoping to restore the interrupted love five years ago . Daisy , though fluctuating, but refuses to say it. Tom feels victory. He decides that Daisy and Gatsby back go together, and he , Nick and Jordan go to another machine.
