It should be noted that due to the difficult social and economic
situation of the Republic of Moldova as well the exodus of people the osteoporosis represents a bleach spot of the official state statistics of Moldova.

No statistical data exist in Moldova. These
data can be collected only partially and from various unofficial sources bay our Association.
According to the official data on nation wide there is the National Protocol of the Osteoporosis updated in 2018 which refers to the relevant data for Europe and USA. But it mentions that “these figures could be also extrapolated for the Republic of Moldova; perhaps with a more severe impact”.

Considering the lack of any official statistical
data, It is practically impossible to collect the information on this matter.
We managed to visit the hospitals in Moldovan districts to discuss with various specialists directly handling the osteoporosis related cases (rheumatologists, family doctors, radiologists and even management).

The results of our investigation are not
very encouraging.
There is not official data regarding the fracture of coxo-femoral joint. But according to the data collected from the hospitals where the patients come in 100% cases, these are about 8.000 cases to 100.000; post-surgery death rate is about 2%.

There are about 3.000 to 100.000 cases
of fractures spinal medulla.
In the Republic of Moldova the costs of the surgery treatment of hip fractures are covered by the state budget in approximate amount of MDL 50.000-80.000 per patient (Euro about 2.500-4.000)
The recovery of the patient usually takes place at home and costs more than MDL 10.000 lei (Euro about 500) + the expenses for the work of the people carrying out the patient.

The length of hospitalization period of the
hip fracture patient is between 5-12 days.
It should be also mentioned that the prostheses are not always the best in terms of quality. The patients have therefore to pay themselves the costs of these prostheses and the post surgery recovery.

There are about 10 devices for osteodensitometry
in a functioning condition and 2 DEXA in Moldova.
Last year at the Moldovan Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery 2.161 persons were investigated using DEXA, one of the 2 devices in the country. Approximately 950 of them had Osteoporosis Diagnosis, 769 had osteopenia and 442 without pathology.

Osteoporosis represents an important issue the population
should be informed about. This needs an additional funding. Because there are major scientific achieves now that the people are not able to make use of due to the lack of information.
I propose the idea of funding the programs helping Moldavian people with osteoporosis to have a fulfilling life.
