Russian rag doll

Russian textile doll is an ancient tradition of Russian folk, playing with it children learnt to keep house. Doll was not just a toy, it was a symbol of a procreation, a guarantee of family happiness. Dolls were a companions of a persons from birth to death and was a required attribute of every celebration.

Special features of Russian rag doll:
• Ceremonial dolls and amulets were made without using pricking and cutting things
• Dolls didn’t have faces
• Dolls didn’t have personal names, just denominations
• There were overwhelming majority of female image for dolls

A majority of Russian dolls since ancient paganism were used like amulets. They were made by natural materials, which were found in forests: wood, herbs, straw and other. People chose these stuffs, because forests were natural habitat of Russian folk.
