What is IELTS ?
IELTS comprises the Academic Module
and the General Training Module.
IELTS is a test of English Language skills
and ability.

Who owns IELTS ?
1. UCESOL – the University of Cambridge ESOL
2. The British Council
3. IDP Education Australia: IELTS Australia
The British Council and IDP deliver IELTS around the
world.
Cambridge ESOL and IDP develop the tests with
assistance from teams of item writers in various
countries.
This means that the test includes international English content and uses a variety of English accents.

What is IELTS ?
The Academic module is used for university entrance and professional registration.
The General Training module is used for entrance to technical training courses. It is also used by several countries (Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand) for immigration
purposes.

How is IELTS made up

Listening

• 4 sections, 40 questions
- short answers
- multiple choice
- completing sentences
- notes
- writing a summary
- referring to maps, flow charts, tables
Time: 30 minutes + 10 minutes to transfer answers to Answer Sheet.
LISTENING TEST

LISTENING
This is in 4 sections, each with 10 questions. The first two sections are concerned with social needs. There is conversation between two speakers and then a monologue. The final two sections are concerned with situations related to educational or training contexts. There is a conversation between upto four people and then a monologue.
A variety of question types are used including : multiple choice, short- answers questions, sentence completion, notes/ chart/ table completion, labelling of diagram, classification, matching
Candidates hear the recording once only and answer the questions as they listen. Ten minutes are allowed at the end to transfer answers to the answer sheet

Tips for Solving the Listening Section
Often speakers will give you an answer and then correct themselves, watch out for this. Its a common trick
Read, write and listen at the same time.
Don’t be surprised if you hear a range of accents and dialects as IELTS is an international test.

READING TEST - Academic

READING
There are three reading passages of increasing difficulty, on topics of general interest and candidates have to answer 40 questions. The passages are taken from magazines, journals, books and newspapers. At least one text contains detailed logical arguments.
A variety of question types are used including multiple choice, short answer questions, sentence completions, notes/ charts/ table completion, labelling a diagram, classification, matching list/phrases, choosing suitable paragraph headings from a list, identification of writer’s views/attitudes.

Tips for Solving the Reading Section
Look at the ways the paragraphs are organised
Don’t concentrate on words you don’t know. Its waste of valuable time.

WRITING TEST ACADEMIC MODULE

WRITING
There are two tasks and it is suggested that candidates spend about 20 minutes on Task 1, which requires them to write at least 150 words, and 40 minutes on Task 2- 250 words. The assessment of Task 2 carries more weight in marking than Task 1.
In Task 1 candidates are asked to look at a diagram or table and to present the information in their own words. They are assessed on their ability to organise, present and possibly compare data, describe the stages of a process, describe an object or event, explain how something works.
In Task 2 candidates are presented with a point of view, argument or problem. They are assessed on their ability to present a solution to the problem, present and justify an opinion, compare and contrast evidence and opinions, evaluate and challenge ideas, evidence or arguments
Candidates are also judged on their ability to write in an appropriate style

Tips for Solving the Writing Section
Don’t repeat ideas in a different ways.
Don’t write too many words. Keep to the word limit for each task.
Learn to recognise how long 150/250 words are in your own handwriting. You don’t really have time to count.

Speaking

SPEAKING TEST
3 Parts
1 Introduction and interview - 4 Minutes
2 Speaking on a given topic - 4 Minutes
3 Two-way discussion - 4 Minutes
Time: 11-14 minutes
The Interview is recorded.

SPEAKING
The speaking module takes between 11 and 14 minutes. It consists of an oral interview between the candidate and an examiner.
There are three main parts
Part I: The candidate and the examiner introduce themselves and then the candidate answers general questions about themselves, their home/ family, their jobs/ studies. Their interests and a wide range of similar familiar topic areas. Thos part lasts between four and five minutes
Part II: The candidate is given a task card with prompts and is asked to talk on a particular topic. The candidate has one minute to prepare and they can make some notes if they wish, before speaking between one and two minutes. The examiner then asks one or two rounding – of questions.

SPEAKING
Part III: The examiner and the candidate engage in a discussion of more abstract issues and concepts, which are thematically linked to the topic prompt in Part II. The discussion lasts between four and five minutes.
The speaking module assesses whether can candidates can communicate effectively in English. The assessment takes into account Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resources, Grammatical Range and Accuracy and Pronunciation

Tips for Solving the Speaking Section
It tests your ability to communicate effectively not just your grammatical accuracy.
Prepare your introduction very well at home .
Practice recording ideas onto a tape recorder at home.
