HISTORY OF CREATION
In 1936, the pharmaceutical magnate, collector and philanthropist Henry Welcom died. His last wish was to create a charitable organization, the main asset of which was the share capital of his company. Welcom wanted the profits to go to medical research. During the first two decades of the Foundation's existence, its total donations amounted to more than a million pounds. However, they increased dramatically in the period 1952-1986, increasing from 10 million pounds to more than 500. Mostly thanks to the discovery of drugs made by J. R. R. Tolkien. Hitchings and G. Elion, awarded the Nobel prize. They developed the first effective treatments for leukemia, as well as suppressing the immune system for successful organ transplants.

LOCATION
The Wellcome Trust's operations are run from two buildings on Euston Road in London. The Wellcome Building, at 183 Euston Road, built in 1932 in Portland stone houses the Wellcome Collection and the adjoining glass and steel building at 215 Euston Road is the Gibbs Building, by Hopkins Architects, which opened in 2004 as the administrative headquarters of the Wellcome Trust. In 2019, the Wellcome Trust also opened an office in Berlin
